मान्यता है कि माता कालरात्रि की पूजा करने से मनुष्य समस्त सिद्धियों को प्राप्त कर लेता है. माता कालरात्रि पराशक्तियों (काला जादू) की साधना करने वाले जातकों के बीच बेहद प्रसिद्ध हैं. मां की भक्ति से दुष्टों का नाश होता है और ग्रह बाधाएं दूर हो जाती हैं.

असुरों को वध करने के लिए दुर्गा मां बनी कालरात्रि 
देवी कालरात्रि का शरीर रात के अंधकार की तरह काला है इनके बाल बिखरे हुए हैं और इनके गले में विधुत की माला है. इनके चार हाथ हैं जिसमें इन्होंने एक हाथ में कटार और एक हाथ में लोहे का कांटा धारण किया हुआ है. इसके अलावा इनके दो हाथ वरमुद्रा और अभय मुद्रा में है. इनके तीन नेत्र है तथा इनके श्वास से अग्नि निकलती है. कालरात्रि का वाहन गर्दभ(गधा) है.

मां कालरात्रि की उत्पत्ति की कथा
कथा के अनुसार दैत्य शुंभ-निशुंभ और रक्तबीज ने तीनों लोकों में हाहाकार मचा रखा था. इससे चिंतित होकर सभी देवतागण शिव जी के पास गए. शिव जी ने देवी पार्वती से राक्षसों का वध कर अपने भक्तों की रक्षा करने को कहा. शिव जी की बात मानकर पार्वती जी ने दुर्गा का रूप धारण किया और शुंभ-निशुंभ का वध कर दिया. परंतु जैसे ही दुर्गा जी ने रक्तबीज को मारा उसके शरीर से निकले रक्त से लाखों रक्तबीज उत्पन्न हो गए. इसे देख दुर्गा जी ने अपने तेज से कालरात्रि को उत्पन्न किया. इसके बाद जब दुर्गा जी ने रक्तबीज को मारा तो उसके शरीर से निकलने वाले रक्त को कालरात्रि ने अपने मुख में भर लिया और सबका गला काटते हुए रक्तबीज का वध कर दिया.

मां को गुड़ का भोग प्रिय है
सप्तमी तिथि के दिन भगवती की पूजा में गुड़ का नैवेद्य अर्पित करके ब्राह्मण को दे देना चाहिए. ऐसा करने से पुरुष शोकमुक्त हो सकता है.
